Science Evening 2026, held on 22 May in the courtyard of Janko Leskovar Primary School in Pregrada, brought together a large number of pupils, parents and visitors for an evening filled with exploration, learning and the discovery of just how interesting, interactive and inspiring science can be.
The FABLAB association took part in the event through the „STEMerica moves on“ project, running a cryptography workshop in which participants explored the principles of hiding and protecting information using ciphers and codes. Through a series of hands-on tasks and logic challenges, the children discovered how encryption methods have developed throughout history and how cryptography is used today - from digital communication to data protection and information security.
The workshop introduced participants to cryptography as an interdisciplinary STEM field that connects mathematics, computing, technical culture and digital technologies, and also showed how interesting science can be when it is learned through inquiry, cooperation and problem solving. We were especially delighted by the curiosity of the pupils, who analysed the ciphers with great interest, looked for patterns and worked out the solutions together.
Once again, Science Evening created a space in which pupils can explore, ask questions, develop new ideas and take an active part in content that brings science closer to everyday life in an accessible and inspiring way. 🙂
The aim of the project's activities is to spark the interest of children and young people in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and to show them how knowledge can be applied in real life - outside the classroom, in the community and in public spaces.
Through knowledge, creativity and innovation, the „STEMerica moves on“ project brings STEM content closer to a wider audience and creates opportunities for the development of future scientists, engineers and innovators. The project is implemented under the grant call „Strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations to promote STEM" (project code SF.2.4.06.04.0122), co-financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus and the Office for Cooperation with NGOs of the Government of the Republic of Croatia.
